Fernando C. Josef

Artistic Director, Tanghalang Pilipino

Mr. Fernando C. Josef is a renowned theater, film, and television actor, director, art educator, cultural worker, and arts manager. He has served as the Artistic Director of Tanghalang Pilipino Foundation, Inc., the resident theater company of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), since 2008. Additionally, he is the President of Dalubhasaan para sa Edukasyon, Sining at Kultura (DESK) and Chairman of the Artists Welfare Project Inc. (AWPI).

In his extensive career, Mr. Josef has held several prominent roles, including Vice-President and Artistic Director of CCP (2001-2007) and Executive Director of the Philippine High School for the Arts (1995-2001). He was also a core member of the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) for over 15 years, where he made significant contributions as an actor, director, educator, and administrator.

Mr. Josef holds a Bachelor of Science in Zoology and a Master in Education, majoring in Counseling, from the University of the Philippines Diliman. His master’s thesis explored the effects of theater arts training on the self-concept of UP freshmen. Academically, he was recognized as a University Scholar, College Scholar, and a recipient of the Fellowship Award from the National Research Council of the Philippines.

Among his artistic achievements, Mr. Josef won Best Actor at the Gawad Urian for Lav Diaz’s Lahi Hayop (2021), and Best Supporting Actor at Cinemalaya for Hiblang Abo (2018) and ENPRESS for MMK’s Lugaw (2004). He also received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Chito Roño’s Signal Rock (2019).
